The CPU is the heart of the computer. Currently there are two major manufacturers of CPU Processors in general use today.
Interface and compatibility
The type and style (sockets) of the CPU is called out in the Mother Board's specifications. You can't put an Intel processor in a Mother board designed for an AMD processor and vise a versa. They physically can't fit!
Here are some of the more important characteristics to consider in selecting a Processor.
Some Major Characteristics
Speed: Standard processor speeds can range more or less from 2.5 to 4.0 GHz.
GHz = Gigi hertz is the frequency at with the processor operates. A higher operating speed means a faster processor.
This is not the only factor for faster performance. The other, is the amount of cores the processor contains.
Cores: Think of cores as the number of processors in the CPU. The manufactures found out that if you can put say 2 processors in 1 CPU you can get double the performance with a given speed. This is called a Duel Core CPU. The standard amount of Cores in desktop computer today is 4 (Quad Core). There are more expensive 6, 8, and 12 cores out there. Again consult the Motherboard manual on the type of cpu needed.
And always Read the Reviews and Customer Q&A on the product you select. Knowledge is Power!
